Providing therapy & mental health services

A journey of learning and self-discovery

About

Thank you for taking the time to explore my website. I appreciate your initiative in seeking support during life’s challenges. Acknowledging the need for assistance is a crucial step that many find difficult.

KLP Hanoi Counseling was set up to provide a safe space for you to discover your true self and embrace life to the fullest. Together, we will gently reclaim parts of yourself that may have been lost, silenced, or exiled. I am dedicated to offering the support necessary to make this journey as safe and comfortable as possible.

Professional Background: I earned my master’s and post-master’s (Educational Specialist) degrees in Professional Counseling at Seton Hall University in the USA. As a Licensed Professional Counselor, I am committed to upholding the American Counseling Association’s Codes of Ethics. To stay current and continually enhance my skills, I regularly attend training sessions.

Although I am originally from Hanoi, I have spent nearly two decades overseas, providing therapy in diverse settings such as international schools, rehabilitation centers, and mental health clinics across different countries. These experiences have equipped me to effectively work with clients of all ages, addressing a spectrum of mental health issues from stress and anger management, relationship issues to more serious disorders like personality disorders, ADHD, OCD, and addictions.

Using a holistic approach, I integrate components of different therapy approaches based on clients’ needs. In addition to EMDR therapy and Internal Family Systems therapy, I use Reality Therapy, play and art therapy, CBT, among others.

I have a particular interest in helping individuals break free from their past, whether it’s trauma like PTSD or less apparent experiences. If you’re facing challenges in overcoming current issues, exploring the combined effectiveness of EMDR and IFS might be worthwhile.

A Bit of Fun Facts About Me: In my childhood, I believed I lacked time for play and had no talent for sports, often facing ridicule. However, in my 30s, I discovered a passion for golf, appreciating not just the exercise but also the importance of maintaining a positive mindset. This experience opened doors for me to enjoy various other sports such as tennis, swimming, table tennis, and basketball.

Nature is a significant source of energy for me, and I find tremendous therapeutic value in gardening, cooking, and being in the forest or on the beach.

I look forward to meeting with you.

Services & Approaches

Individual Therapy

One-on-one therapy stands as the most prevalent form of counseling, providing individuals with a private and confidential space to delve into one’s deep thoughts and emotions, often difficult to express openly. This setting creates an opportunity to uncover the underlying issues that obstruct a person from achieving fulfillment in life. Acknowledging that not all clients wish to address the root causes of their challenges, I maintain flexibility in meeting clients where they are, allowing them to progress at their own pace. For each client, I adopt a flexible and integrative approach to design customized treatment plans to ensure the effectiveness of individual therapy.

Couples Therapy

Couples therapy is specifically designed to mend emotional wounds caused by partners. It aids in enhancing self-awareness, helping each partner articulate their needs and learn how to support their significant other. Additionally, couples therapy can facilitate a peaceful conclusion to relationships when necessary, minimizing negative impacts on the individuals involved and their loved ones. Furthermore, couples therapy can address individual challenges such as depression, substance abuse, and PTSD. I use Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy and The Gottman Method, both of which have been well researched demonstrating successful results.

Group Therapy

Facilitated by one or more therapists, group therapy involves approximately five to 15 clients who typically meet for an hour or two each week. Some individuals participate in both individual and group therapy, while others exclusively engage in group sessions.

Group therapy offers unique advantages that individual therapy may not provide, as members benefit from shared empathy, insights and support both during and after group sessions are over. It is often employed when the group shares a common issue or problem, and it also tends to be a more cost-effective option compared to individual therapy.

EMDR

EMDR is a psychotherapy technique designed to relieve the distress associated with disturbing memories. Short for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, it involves recalling a specific troublesome experience while following a side-to-side visual stimulus delivered by the therapist. The resulting lateral eye movements help reduce the emotional charge of the memory so that the experience can be safely discussed, digested, and stripped of the power to trigger anxiety and avoidance.

Internal Family Systems

Internal Family Systems (IFS) is an approach that identifies and addresses sub-personalities  within each person’s mental system. These sub-personalities consist of wounded and painful emotions such as anger and shame,  that try to control and protect the person from pain. The sub-personalities are often in conflict with one’s Self. IFS focuses on healing one’s wounds and restoring mental balance by changing the dynamics that create discord among the sub-personalities and the Self.

Reality Therapy

Reality therapy is an therapy that focuses on improving present relationships or circumstances, with less discussion of the past. The idea is that our essential need is to be loved, to feel we belong and that our needs can be met by building connections with others. Reality Therapy sees behavior as choices. It teaches us that while we can’t control how we feel, we can control how we think and behave.  This approach helps people take control of their own lives by learning to make better choices.
